SGSL Junior Umpire Program

What is a “Junior Umpire”?

A “Junior Umpire” is a teen or preteen who has taken the official USA Softball Umpire all-day training and is registered and insured to umpire girls softball games behind the plate and on the bases. Junior Umpires will call our 10U and 8U. Some of the top Junior Umpires may get the chance to ump some 12U games as well.

What training does a Junior Umpire receive?

The same training that the adult umpires do! USA Softball puts on all-day training every winter, and the Juniors must complete that training in order to be eligible to umpire games during our Spring season.

Do the Junior Umpires get paid?

Of course! The Juniors are paid and they receive other perks like free food at the snack shack and Junior Umpire swag.

  • 2A (8U): $40 per game (solo); if 2 Umpires – Plate is $30/Base is $25
  • 3A (10U): $50 per game (solo); if 2 Umpires – Plate is $35/Base is $25
  • 4A (12U): $55 per game (solo); if 2 Umpires – Plate is $40/Base is $30

What if my child is interested in becoming a Junior Umpire?

Complete this SGSL registration form: SGSLJuniorUmpireRegistration form

Interested participants must also register with USA Softball by February 1, 2026:

  1. Visit NorCalUSASoftball.com and create a profile (each umpire must have their own).
  2. From the dashboard, select “My Family” → “Officials” → “Junior Umpires” and complete the registration process.
  3. Attend the mandatory all day  training on Feb 7, 2026 at Fremont High School, arrive at 9:45 am and the training will last around 4 hours depending on how many register.

There is a $40 USA Softball registration fee. This fee can be reimbursed by the league; however, the umpire’s first assigned game will be unpaid and will be used to offset the registration cost. All games after that first game will be paid at the normal Junior Umpire rate.

Game Schedule:

Weekday games start at 5:30 pm.

  • Tuesday: 2A (This is a great place for new umpires to get experience in a casual game environment!)
  • Wednesday: 3A
  • Thursday: 4A
  • Friday: 2A & 3A
  • Saturday: Might be best for high school players. All levels play on Saturday, starting with younger girls in the morning.

Jr Umpire Training – Winter 2026- Please hold Feb 7th and 21st as possible training dates.

SGSL uses USA Softball rules as the leagues base rule set. These rules are modified for regular season recreational play by division. See local divisional rules here.
