Our Recreational League is the heart of our program and our most popular offering! Designed for players of all experience levels—from first-timers to returning athletes—this league is where skills, confidence, and friendships grow.
Teams in our 6U through 14U divisions practice 1–2 times per week and typically play on Saturdays, with additional weeknight games, particularly for older divisions. But it’s not just about the games—our focus is on teamwork, character, and building lasting friendships, all while helping players sharpen their softball skills and grow their confidence on and off the field.
The season wraps up in May and leads directly into our tryout-based Sunnyvale Shockwave Program, where selected athletes take their game to the next level, competing in USA Softball tournaments across the Bay Area in June and July.

Playing Up or Down Division
Softball players may request to play up or down a division; however, all requests are subject to league approval and based on player safety, skill level, and roster availability.
-
Playing Up:
If your player is requesting to play up, you should register based on their USA Softball age group and pay that registration fee. Players requesting to move up must participate in evaluations for both their current age group and the higher division. This allows coaches from both divisions to evaluate the player—ensuring that if the player is not selected for the higher division, they can still be placed appropriately in their original age group. If your player is selected to play in the higher division, you will then be responsible for paying the difference in registration fees, if any, between the two divisions. -
Playing Down:
Requests to play down a division will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis and must be approved by the league. Approval is generally based on safety considerations or experience level. Players approved to play down will participate in the lower division evaluations only and will remain in that division for the season. Registration should still be completed under the player’s USA Softball age group, with adjustments made by the league once placement is confirmed.

Scholarship Assistance
We want every player to have the opportunity to join our league, and financial assistance is available to help make that possible! Families interested in support can apply online by completing our Scholarship Request Form.
A Few Things to Know:
-
Applications are reviewed individually, and we do our best to support every family in need.
-
Families receiving financial assistance are asked to contribute through additional volunteer opportunities—this helps keep our league strong and connected.
-
Early applications are encouraged, as assistance is limited and granted on a first-come, first-served basis.
We’re excited to welcome every player to our league and appreciate all the ways families help make our community great!
🍿 Snack Shack & Fee Information
For the 4U and 6U divisions, registration fees are set at a flat rate — there is no snack shack buyout.
For 8U through 14U, a $50 snack shack buyout is included in the registration fee. This buyout will be refunded if a family member volunteers at least 2.5 hours in the snack shack during the season.
Your time and support help keep our league running smoothly and our players smiling — thank you for contributing to the SGSL community!
🎽 What’s Included with Registration
The 2026 Spring Recreation League fee includes a team jersey and socks, with softball pants provided for 6U (A) and 8U (AA) divisions. Players will participate in spring league games running from March through mid-May. Each player will receive a recognition award at the end of the season, along with an individual and team photo memory mate. All necessary equipment is provided, except for cleats and a softball glove, and all teams are supported by league-trained volunteer coaches and trained umpires.
🧢 Volunteer Coaches & Certification Requirements
SGSL is powered by volunteers, and we are always in need of Head Coaches and Co-Head Coaches. If you’re interested in helping lead a team, please complete the Coach/Manager application on our registration site.
To ensure a safe and positive experience for all athletes, all volunteers who will have contact with players must be certified. Required training includes:
-
ACE Certification through USA Softball (which includes a background check)
-
Concussion Protocol Training to recognize and respond to head injuries
-
SafeSport Training (also known as Safe Space), which focuses on abuse prevention, athlete protection, and creating a respectful team environment
These online courses typically take 1–2 hours in total and are mandatory for all coaches, assistants, and team administrators working directly with players.
🤝 Family Volunteer Expectations
As a volunteer-driven league, SGSL requires each family to support their child’s team. Typical responsibilities include preparing fields before home games, helping with scorekeeping, and assisting with basic team coordination. Your involvement helps us create the best possible experience for every player.
If you’re ready to play, learn, and grow on the field this fall, we can’t wait to see you out there!
Team Administrator Needed
Each team will need a Team Administrator (Team Admin/Manager) to serve as the main liaison for communication and volunteers. The Team Admin will:
- Coordinate team communication (TeamSnap, email, etc.)
- Organize volunteers for roles below
- Arrange the end-of-season party
